Michel Morissette is a talented Quebec-based guitarist in many jazz styles. The cheekily named Nothing Toulouse (composed on a tour through France) is his fourth album to date, and it's a strong showing of his talent as both a player and a composer. Morissette bounces around to different jazz styles with each track on this album. The opening and title track is the most driving track on the album, built up around Morisette's almost rock style of jazz guitar. The back half of the album is focused around the funky interplay between Morisette and bass player Jean Cyr, especially the playful “Do It”. Morrisette and Cyr get close to some fusion territory in a couple of the tracks. Only two tracks on the album aren't focused around guitar, but they're both good. “Impulsions” shows off Gaeten Daigneault's playful keyboard playing, and “Le Chant” is an ensemble piece that showcases the entier quintet's talents. Very enjoyable jazz release from the always innovative Effendi label.

I don't know guitarist Michel Morissette that much, and I admit, I should've paid more attention to his career. What a surprise when I stuck the CD in my player, wow these guys are cookin', even if it's not your "classic" kind of jazz, a somewhat rock sound and quite a talent for improvisation.
With opening track Nothing Toulouse, his fast-paced, crazy riffs makes for some exciting guitar playing, as always, supported by saxophonist André Leroux giving all he's got. On the CD, sample some tenderness on Le chant and interesting riffs on Impulsions.
A great CD and a great band : André Leroux, tenor sax, Gaétan Daigneault, piano/rhodes, Jean Cyr, bass, and Alain Boyer, drums.

Le 14 octobre dernier était lancé au Patro Vys de Montréal et pour la postérité «Nothing Toulouse», troisième album de Michel Morissette, fougueux guitariste «filionnaire» (cf Bois-des-Filions!), que je qualifiais il y a bien longtemps «d’émérite aux doigts d’enfer».
Une décennie après la sortie de «The Boilerman» et huit ans après celle de «Big City», je dois maintenant ajouter qu’avec le temps, les voyages et les multiples expériences de la vie, l’inspiration et le style de ce musicien aguerri mais encore peu connu pour de multiples raisons ayant peu à voir avec son talent naturel, ont mûri et se sont peaufinés de façon évidente sans toutefois s’assagir ou faire quelque concession que ce soit aux «tendances» ou aux diktats du marché musical actuel.
À la fois profondément inspirées, bouillonnantes d’énergie mais sagement dosées lorsqu’il le faut, les compositions de Michel Morissette font preuve d’une quête naturelle vers une dynamique harmonique idéale alliant jazz-bop, blues et même certains éléments de rock où thématiques lyriques solides, instinct et passion s’harmonisent à la quasi-perfection tout en laissant le champ libre à une improvisation vaste, sensible et intelligente.
Loin de monopoliser toute l’attention, Michel donne toute la place nécessaire aux excellents musiciens qui l’accompagnent généreusement et parmi lesquels on retrouve ses fidèles comparses: André Leroux aux saxophones ainsi que Jean Cyr (alias Johnny Wax) à la basse et à la contrebasse. Également totalement présents dans ce décor sonore, Alain Boyer à la batterie et Gaëtan Daigneault au piano et au Fender Rhodes, une première et très heureuse incursion des 88 touches d’ivoire et d’ébène dans les albums et la belle aventure musicale de Michel Morissette.
Fort de huit compositions savamment enregistrées et mixées au Studio Planète de Montréal par François Arbour, «Nothing Toulouse» est un album de jazz 100% québécois absolument digne d’une écoute approfondie auquel je souhaite sincèrement de faire sa marque ici et de traverser les frontières afin de faire la différence qu’il mérite!

Jazz- Club - Swing avec les cousins québécois
Vendredi soir, la nouvelle cave du jazz club accueillait Michel Morissette 5 tet dans un concert détonnant et très aboutit. Ce fut un concert exceptionnel, ces québécois proposaient une immense variation sur le swing qui fait courir les notes sur la scène, comme un feu d,artifice dans un ciel d,été. Leur manière de démarrer les pièces d’un seul élan, étaient à elles seules un poème jazzy.
Michel Morissette guitariste génial signaient là de nombreuses compositions. Sa manière de rappeler les thèmes au long cours de la rivière musicale, donnait à l’ensemble une structure parfois nostalgique ou pleine d’ardeur, riche en tout cas de l’histoire du swing.
